It was opened on November 7, 1944, when severe struggle was still going on. The museum’s collection and 30 exposition halls contain approximately 80.000 unique exhibits: a rich collection of documents and photos, weapons used by hoops and partisans including homemade ones. There is a diorama of the Maly Trastyanets death camp (the third largest in Europe).

The Mechelen Museum of Deportation and the Resistance is one of the rare museums in Europe to bear witness to the tragedy suffered by the Jewish people during the Second World War and be located in one of the places that itself served as an antechamber for the extermination of the Jewish people. The foundation stone of the new museum was laid by the President of the Flemish Community, Mr. Luc Van den Brande, on September 20, 1992.

The museum is housed at the recently restored synagogue in Sofia. The small collection is especially notable for its selection of Parochet (Ark curtains) from former synagogues of Bulgaria.  There is also an exhibit on the history of Jews in Bulgaria and the fate of the community during the Holocaust.
